Situated at the centre of culturally active Jogjakarta, the once campus of Indonesia Institute of the Arts, Jogja National Museum is growing its reputation for the site for contemporary arts – five minutes drive from the centre of Javanese Cultural Centre, The Jogjakarta Sultanate Palace. The traditional and modern practices of Arts, and its blending possibility have been the characteristic of this historical city. As for the buildings within the site, it has also been close with marks of time. In the 1990’s the site was one of the centre of activities for Jogjakarta based students who opposed the Soeharto regime, that led to the fall of the new order in 1998. Some of the cries for reform in the form of paintings can still be seen in the walls of the museum.  Together with new contemporary touches from recent artists, the site is in course of gaining its objective to be the first contemporary art museum in Indonesia.
